In some of the bigger French cities like Bordeaux and Lyon, they have bike stations throughout the city where you can rent a bike from and then drop it off at any other bike station across the station. Usually it costs around 1 euro to rent it for the day and sometimes, like in the case of the system in Bordeaux, it is free if you use it for less than 30 minutes. When the weather is nice or public transportation is closed, it is a great, simple way to get from one destination to another or to just cruise around and see the city. For some reason though they don't accept bank cards that don't have a chip on them so most standard American cards don't work. Aside from that it is extremely convenient and a lot of fun to bike around the cities. It's cheap, convenient, quick, and you don't have to wait for the metro or the bus to pick you up.
